Trending Now in Skin Care: Peptides
Not sure what peptides are or why you should care? You're not alone, but they're having a moment and you're about to hear a lot more about them thanks to TikTok and Gen Z.
Although peptides are not new in the skin care landscape (they may currently be in your favourite beauty products without you realizing it), so far they haven't received the same level of attention as some other skin care ingredients have, such as vitamin C and retinol. This is likely because if skin care ingredient actives were actors, vitamin C and retinol play the lead, whereas peptides take on more of a supporting role. However, all are important to an excellent and effective final product.
Peptides and Your Skin
Peptides naturally occur in our bodies and are vital for life. They're made of short chains of amino acids. Long chains of amino acids create proteins. There are many different amino acid chain combinations that serve different functions. In terms of skin care, different peptides can encourage and support collagen and elastin production, calm and soothe skin, or firm and brighten. That's no small feat!
There are different groups of peptides used in skin care to achieve various results: signal peptides, carrier peptides, neurotransmitter inhibitor peptides, and enzyme inhibitor peptides.
Signal peptides function by signalling skin cells to produce more proteins, such as collagen, elastin, and keratin. These peptides are especially helpful since, for example, collagen begins to deplete in our 20s at a rate of 1% each year.
Carrier peptides help carry ingredients into the skin and are used for better ingredient absorption.
Neurotransmitter inhibitor peptides are used to help relax facial muscles as a non-invasive topical alternative to injectables such as Botox.
Enzyme inhibitor peptides help to prevent or block certain functions such as tyrosinase which contributes to hyperpigmentation.
Incorporating Peptides Into Your Routine
The beauty of peptides are that they are extremely well tolerated by most skin types. In fact, when studied, very few individuals have issues incorporating products containing peptides into their skin care routine.
Even though peptides first made their entrance into the skin care market in the 1980s and exploded in innovation and formulation during the early 2000s, it can sometimes feel like they are hiding in plain sight. The following section will introduce you to some amazing products that contain peptides and you'll see how easy it is to add them into your everyday routine, whether in the form of a cleanser, serum, moisturizer, or cosmetic!
