Heading Outside? Here’s What to Apply When
Summer is here and that means lots of time outdoors. It also means protecting our skin - but how do we apply our products to make sure we’re preserving their effectiveness? Here’s a quick reference:
1. Skin care
To get the full benefit of your skin care, this step comes first. Do your full routine - cleanse, tone, apply serum, and moisturize (but don’t apply SPF just yet). Once you’re done, give it five or ten minutes to absorb before moving on.
2. Bug protection (if using a lotion)
We don’t want to disrupt our makeup or sun protection with our bug repellent, so if using a lotion, apply this right after your skin care. Massage into skin head to toe, including the face (but avoid the eye area and lips). You can even smooth some over your hair and clothes (not too much or it will look greasy). Again, give it a few minutes to absorb before Step 3.
If your makeup has SPF, you can skip this step for your face, but you’ll still want to protect your body. Apply your sunscreen liberally - the rule of thumb is a shotglass full to cover the whole body. If you’re using a mineral sunscreen, it may take some time to work into the skin so the whitish cast disappears.
Contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t take 20 minutes for your SPF to start working - that happens immediately. However, it does take 20 minutes to form an even film over your skin. So you do want to allow for that wait before moving to Step 4, to make sure you’ve got even coverage.
If you’re using a BB cream with SPF, you can skip Step 3 for the face and neck, and include that in this step instead.
5. Bug protection (if using a spray)
You’re nearly there! The final step is bug spray, if you’re using it. Spray evenly over skin and clothes, and you’re ready to go.
6. Touch ups
If you’re spending the day outside, you’ll need to touch up your bug and sun protection. Just be sure to follow the same order as above, meaning bug lotion, SPF, bug spray. We love this spray for refreshing your sun protection without disrupting your makeup.
